Chapter One

Chapter One Terms of Service

Effective date: October 1, 2026

Please read these Terms carefully. Section 17 requires most disputes to be resolved through individual arbitration rather than in court, and waives class actions. You can opt out of arbitration within 30 days of accepting the version of these Terms that first included it.

1. Introduction

In short: these Terms are the agreement between you and LibraryThing for using Chapter One.

Chapter One is a dating service for readers, operated by LibraryThing.com, Inc. ("LibraryThing," "we," "us"), 286 Spring Street, Portland, ME 04102. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Chapter One app and the Chapter One website at chapteronedating.com (together, the "Service"). The website provides information about Chapter One and these documents; accounts, matching and purchases are in the app.

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Code of Conduct and Community Guidelines, which are part of these Terms. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information; please read it. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.

If you downloaded Chapter One from the Apple App Store, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement governs your license to the app software itself; these Terms govern the Service. If the two conflict, these Terms control your relationship with LibraryThing.

Chapter One is separate from LibraryThing's other services. You don't need a LibraryThing account to use Chapter One, a LibraryThing account doesn't create a Chapter One account, and nothing is imported from one to the other.

Chapter One is launching area by area. You can join from anywhere in the United States, but outside the areas where Chapter One has fully launched you may see fewer people near you.

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect and ask you to accept them. If you keep using the Service after that, you accept the updated Terms.

2. Who can use Chapter One

In short: you must be an adult in the United States with a verified phone number and no felony, sex-crime or violent-crime conviction.

To use Chapter One, you must:

You may have only one account, and you must verify a mobile phone number to activate it (see Section 3). By creating an account, you confirm that you meet these requirements. We don't independently verify them (see Section 9), and we may close your account if we learn you don't meet them.

3. Your account

In short: sign up with email, Apple or Google; verify your phone; keep your login secure.

You can sign up with an email address or sign in with Apple or Google. When you sign in with Apple or Google, their terms and privacy policies also apply to that sign-in.

To activate your account, you must verify a mobile phone number. We'll text you a code through our verification provider (see the Privacy Policy). Verification texts are one-time account messages, not marketing. A phone number can be attached to only one Chapter One account.

You're responsible for keeping your login secure and for activity on your account, except activity that happens after you've told us your account was compromised and we've had a reasonable chance to act. If you think someone else has accessed your account, tell us right away at [email protected].

4. Your responsibilities

In short: be honest, be respectful, and use your own name (first name only).

When you use Chapter One, you agree to:

Location. Every member sets a location. If you allow location access, Chapter One uses your phone's location to show you people in your area and to detect spam and fake accounts. If you don't allow it, you must enter a place instead. Other members never see your location — only a rounded distance ("around 20 miles"). See the Privacy Policy.

5. What you may not do

In short: no deception, harassment, scams, commercial use, automation or AI-made content.

You agree not to:

6. Content that isn't allowed

In short: some content isn't permitted anywhere on Chapter One.

You may not post or send content that:

Books are the point of Chapter One. Book covers, titles and quotations, and honest discussion of difficult subjects in books, are allowed even when the subject matter is dark. The rules above are about your own photos and your conduct toward other members.

7. Who owns what

In short: you own your content, other members own theirs, and LibraryThing owns the Service.

"Your content" means everything you add to Chapter One, including photos, profile text, the location you display, the books you list and your messages. You keep ownership of your content and are responsible for it. You confirm that you have the rights needed to post it.

Other members own their content. You may not copy, share or use another member's content outside Chapter One without their permission — except that you may share what you need to keep yourself safe (for example, telling a friend who you're meeting), to report someone to us or to the police, or to get legal advice.

LibraryThing owns the Service, including its software, design, text and trademarks such as "Chapter One" and "LibraryThing." We give you a limited, personal, revocable, non-transferable license to use the Service for its intended purpose under these Terms.

8. Permission you give us to use your content

In short: you let us use your content to run Chapter One, for as long as we keep it under our Privacy Policy.

By adding content to Chapter One, you grant LibraryThing a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, display, adapt (for example, to resize a photo) and distribute your content in order to operate, provide, secure and improve the Service. We may let our service providers exercise this license on our behalf, but we won't sublicense your content to anyone else or sell it.

This license lasts for as long as we retain your content under our Privacy Policy — while it's on the Service, and through the retention periods described there, including backups. It ends when we delete the content and its backup copies, except for copies we must keep for legal or safety reasons and copies of messages that the other member still holds. Messages are licensed only so we can deliver, store, protect and moderate them.

9. Safety and background checks

In short: we don't screen members. Take care when you meet people.

CHAPTER ONE DOES NOT CONDUCT CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS OR SCREENINGS ON ITS MEMBERS.

Chapter One does not verify members' identity or age, and does not run criminal-background or sex-offender-registry checks — not at sign-up, and not when a member is reported. If we ever introduce identity verification or screening, we will tell you before we do.

You are responsible for your interactions with other members, online and in person. LibraryThing is not responsible for the conduct of any member. Use good judgment, and contact 911 or local authorities if you feel unsafe.

Safety awareness. Anyone who is able to commit identity theft can also falsify a dating profile. There is no substitute for acting with caution when communicating with any stranger who wants to meet you. Never include your last name, e-mail address, home address, phone number, place of work, or any other identifying information in your profile or initial messages, and stop communicating with anyone who pressures you for personal or financial information or attempts in any way to trick you into revealing it. If you choose to have a face-to-face meeting with another member, always tell someone in your family or a friend where you are going and when you will return; never agree to be picked up at your home; always provide your own transportation to and from your date and meet in a public place with many people around. Never send money to anyone you meet on Chapter One. Our Code of Conduct and Community Guidelines contain our full safety information, which we also show you when you register.

Fraud alerts. If we remove a member because we believe they were using a false identity or trying to get money from other members, we will alert members who exchanged messages with them (see the Code of Conduct and Community Guidelines).

Nothing in this section is a promise that Chapter One will keep you safe; it is information to help you keep yourself safe.

10. Reporting, moderation and appeals

In short: report problems to us. Automated checks flag content; people decide. You can appeal.

You can report a member or content from their profile or conversation, or by emailing [email protected]. You can block any member; a blocked member can't see your profile or contact you.

LibraryThing moderates Chapter One with automated checks that run on our own systems and with review by our staff. Automated checks can hold content for review, flag it, and tell you when something you posted needs attention; they never remove content or close accounts on their own. Staff make those decisions. When content is reported or flagged, or when the law requires it, our staff may read the relevant messages and view the relevant photos. We aren't required to monitor all content.

We may remove content, issue warnings, limit features (for example, messaging or likes) for a period or until lifted, or suspend or close accounts that violate these Terms or our Code of Conduct and Community Guidelines, or when we believe it's necessary to protect members, LibraryThing or the Service.

If you think we made a mistake, you can appeal in the app or by emailing [email protected]. A person, not an automated system, reviews every appeal, and we'll respond within 7 days.

11. Intimate images shared without consent

In short: if an intimate image of you was shared on Chapter One without your consent, we'll remove it within 48 hours.

Chapter One prohibits posting or sending any intimate image or video of a person — real or digitally created or altered — without that person's consent. If you appear in such an image on Chapter One, you or someone authorized to act for you can ask us to remove it, whether or not you have a Chapter One account. To make a request, use "Report" on the photo, profile or message, or email [email protected] with "Takedown request" in the subject line; you don't need an account to email us. Your request must be in writing and include: your physical or electronic signature (typing your full name is enough); enough information for us to find the image; a statement that you believe in good faith it was shared without your consent, and anything that helps us confirm that; and a way to contact you. We'll give you a reference number, remove the image and make reasonable efforts to find and remove known identical copies as soon as possible and within 48 hours of a valid request, and tell you what we did. We may remove in good faith anything that appears to be a nonconsensual intimate image before we receive a request. Our full process is in the Code of Conduct and Community Guidelines. This process is required by the federal TAKE IT DOWN Act, which the Federal Trade Commission enforces.

12. Purchases and subscriptions

In short: paid features are sold through the App Store and Google Play and renew automatically until you cancel through your store account. Complimentary time never turns into a charge. Residents of some states have extra cancellation rights, set out in the Appendix.

Chapter One offers paid features, including subscriptions and one-time purchases, sold by LibraryThing.com, Inc. through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Apple or Google is the merchant of record: they collect your payment, send your receipt and process renewals, cancellations and refunds under their terms. Prices and what's included are shown before you buy, and if the terms shown at purchase differ from anything here, the terms shown at purchase govern.

Automatic renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period for the same length of time, at the then-current price, until you cancel. The price, period, renewal date and how to cancel are shown before you subscribe. There is no minimum purchase obligation. We won't start a subscription unless you first agree to these renewal terms by confirming the purchase in the App Store or Google Play, and we keep a record of what you agreed to and when.

Cancelling. Turn off automatic renewal or cancel at any time in your device's subscription settings, or tap "Manage subscription" under Protagonist > Account, which takes you there. Cancellation stops future renewals; you keep access through the end of the period you paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

Reminders. For subscriptions longer than a month, we'll email you at least 30 days before each renewal with the date, the amount and how to cancel. For monthly subscriptions, we'll remind you of your subscription terms at least once a year. You can choose to get these by email, text or app notification under Protagonist > Account.

Promotional codes and complimentary time. Promotional codes and complimentary time we give you never turn into a paid subscription unless we clearly say so when we give them; conditions are stated with the code.

Price changes. If the price of your subscription will increase, we'll tell you at least 25 days before it takes effect — the new price, the date, and how to cancel — and Apple or Google will also ask for your consent where their rules require it. If you're charged a new price you didn't accept, you may cancel within 14 days after the first charge at that price and receive a pro-rated refund of the unused portion.

Other changes. If we make a material change to what a subscription includes, we'll tell you before it takes effect and remind you how to cancel. If we discontinue a paid feature you've paid for, we'll refund the unused portion.

Refunds. Refunds for store purchases are requested from Apple or Google under their policies. Except where the law requires otherwise, purchases are not refundable.

Your rights in certain states. If you live in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island or Wisconsin, state law gives you additional rights, set out in the Appendix to these Terms. In every one of those states you have at least seven days after your first purchase to cancel for a full refund, refunded within ten days, with no fee — and if you bought through Apple and Apple doesn't refund you in time, we will.

13. Closing your account

In short: you can pause or leave any time; we can remove accounts that break these Terms.

Disabling your account (Protagonist > Account) hides your profile from other members and pauses matching until you turn it back on. Your data stays as it is. Deleting your account removes your profile from the Service immediately and starts the deletion process described in our Privacy Policy. Deleting your account doesn't cancel a subscription bought through Apple or Google; cancel that through your store account first.

We may suspend or close your account at any time if we believe you've violated these Terms or our Code of Conduct and Community Guidelines, or to protect members or the Service. A suspended account can't be seen by other members or use the Service until the suspension ends. If we close your account for a violation, you won't receive a refund for unused paid features, except as the law requires.

Sections 7, 8, 9 and 13 through 18 continue to apply after your account is closed.

14. Copyright complaints

In short: tell our copyright agent if you think something on Chapter One infringes your copyright; the member can respond with a counter-notice.

We respond to notices of claimed copyright infringement that comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. §512), and we terminate the accounts of repeat infringers.

Designated agent. LibraryThing.com, Inc., Attn: Copyright Agent, 286 Spring Street, Portland, ME 04102, [email protected]. This agent is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office for LibraryThing.com, Inc. and its services, including Chapter One.

Notice. Your notice must include: your physical or electronic signature; identification of the copyrighted work; identification of the material you claim is infringing and enough information for us to find it (the member's profile name and a description or screenshot); your contact information; a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn't authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law; and a statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and you're the owner or authorized to act for the owner. If a notice is incomplete, we'll tell you what's missing. Please use "Report" instead for privacy, impersonation or intimate-image complaints; those are faster.

What we do. When we receive a valid notice, we'll promptly remove or disable the material, notify the member who posted it (with a copy of the notice), record it against their account, and confirm to you what we did.

Counter-notice. If your content was removed and you believe that was a mistake or misidentification, you may send our agent a counter-notice with: your physical or electronic signature; identification of the removed material and where it appeared; a statement, under penalty of perjury, that you believe in good faith it was removed by mistake or misidentification; your name, address and telephone number; and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your district (or, if outside the United States, any district where LibraryThing may be found) and will accept service of process from the person who filed the notice. We'll send the counter-notice to that person and restore the material 10 to 14 business days later unless they tell us they've filed a court action.

Misrepresentation. Under 17 U.S.C. §512(f), anyone who knowingly and materially misrepresents that material is infringing, or was removed by mistake, is liable for damages, including costs and attorneys' fees.

Repeat infringers. We keep a record of valid notices about each account and will close, in appropriate circumstances, the account of a member who is the subject of repeated valid notices — ordinarily after three in twelve months, sooner where infringement is flagrant.

15. Links, bookstores and LibraryThing

In short: some book links are affiliate links. No third-party ads; we may tell you about LibraryThing.

Chapter One may link to bookstores and other third-party websites. Some bookstore links are affiliate links, which means LibraryThing may earn a commission if you buy something after following one; we mark them where they appear. We don't control third-party sites and aren't responsible for them. Chapter One shows no third-party advertising. We may tell you about LibraryThing's own services.

16. Disclaimers and limits on liability

In short: we provide Chapter One as is, can't promise you'll find a match, and limit what we owe if something goes wrong.

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent permitted by law, LibraryThing disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don't promise that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure or error-free, or that you'll find a match.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, LibraryThing will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service or the conduct of any member. LibraryThing's total liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of $100 or the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.

Some states don't allow certain of these limits, so some may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms limits rights that state law gives you and doesn't let you waive, including the rights described in Section 12.

17. Resolving disputes and arbitration

In short: contact us first. If we can't resolve it, most disputes go to individual arbitration, unless you opt out within 30 days.

Informal resolution first. Before starting arbitration or a lawsuit, you and LibraryThing agree to try to resolve the dispute informally for at least 60 days. Start by emailing [email protected] with a description of the dispute and what you're asking for.

Arbitration. If we can't resolve it, you and LibraryThing agree that any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service will be resolved by binding individual arbitration before a single neutral arbitrator. The arbitration will be administered by a nationally recognized consumer arbitration provider, which is to be determined; LibraryThing will tell you in writing which provider and which consumer rules apply before any arbitration begins. LibraryThing will pay all filing, administrative and arbitrator fees beyond any consumer filing fee the provider's rules require you to pay. Any hearing will take place in the county where you live or by video, at your choice. The arbitrator, not a court, decides whether a dispute must be arbitrated, except as the "Many similar claims" paragraph provides.

No class actions; no jury. You and LibraryThing may bring claims only individually, not as a plaintiff or class member in any class, collective or representative proceeding, and each of us waives the right to a jury trial. If the class-action waiver is found unenforceable for a particular claim, that claim will be heard in court, not in arbitration.

Many similar claims. This paragraph applies if 25 or more members bring arbitration demands against LibraryThing that raise similar claims and are represented by the same lawyers or by lawyers working together. First, up to 10 of the demands — half chosen by the claimants' lawyers and half by LibraryThing — will proceed as individual arbitrations. The other demands wait: their filing and administrative fees are not due, and any deadline for bringing those claims is paused, until the first cases are decided. When they are, you and LibraryThing agree to spend at least 60 days trying to settle the remaining claims with a mediator, taking the results into account. Claims that don't settle then proceed in batches of no more than 25, each batch before a single arbitrator and with a single set of fees, chosen the same way, until all are resolved. A court, not the arbitrator, decides whether this paragraph applies and whether it has been followed. If a court finds this paragraph unenforceable for a particular claim, that claim will be heard in court under "Courts" below.

Exceptions. Either of us may bring an individual claim in small-claims court, or seek a court order to stop infringement or misuse of intellectual property or unauthorized access to the Service. Claims of sexual assault or sexual harassment may be brought in court at the claimant's choice, as provided by the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act of 2021.

Opting out. You can opt out of this arbitration agreement by emailing [email protected] within 30 days of first accepting a version of these Terms that contains it, with your name, the email address on your account and a clear statement that you want to opt out. Opting out doesn't affect the rest of these Terms.

Courts. Any dispute not subject to arbitration will be heard in the state or federal courts located in Cumberland County, Maine, and you and LibraryThing consent to their jurisdiction.

This section survives the closing of your account.

18. General terms

In short: the legal fine print.

Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maine, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and by the Federal Arbitration Act. This choice of law does not take away protections that the consumer-protection laws of the state where you live give you and don't let you waive.

Indemnity. You agree to indemnify LibraryThing against claims, losses and costs, including reasonable attorneys' fees, arising from your content, your conduct or your violation of these Terms, to the extent permitted by law.

Changes to the Service. We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the Service. If we discontinue a paid feature you've paid for, we'll refund the unused portion.

Notices. We may send notices to the email address on your account or in the app. You consent to receive account notices electronically.

Entire agreement. These Terms, including the Appendix, together with the Code of Conduct and Community Guidelines, are the whole agreement between you and LibraryThing about Chapter One. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. Our failure to enforce any part isn't a waiver. You may not transfer your rights under these Terms; we may transfer ours, for example in a merger or sale. There are no third-party beneficiaries of these Terms.

Notice to California residents. Under California Civil Code §1789.3, California users are entitled to the following notice. Chapter One is operated by LibraryThing.com, Inc., 286 Spring Street, Portland, ME 04102; email [email protected]. The charges for paid features are shown before you buy. If you have a question or complaint, contact us at that address. You may also contact the Complaint Assistance Unit of the Division of Consumer Services of the California Department of Consumer Affairs (now the Consumer Information Center) at 1625 North Market Blvd., Suite N 112, Sacramento, CA 95834, or by telephone at (800) 952-5210 (TTY: 711 or (800) 735-2929).

Appendix: Notice to subscribers in certain states

This Appendix is part of the Terms of Service and is the "dating service contract" for the purposes of the state laws it names. Statutory text is reproduced as the statutes require; plain-language passages explain it.

YOU, THE BUYER, MAY CANCEL THIS CONTRACT, WITHOUT ANY PENALTY OR OBLIGATION, AT ANY TIME PRIOR TO MIDNIGHT OF THE ORIGINAL CONTRACT SELLER'S THIRD BUSINESS DAY FOLLOWING THE DATE OF THIS CONTRACT, EXCLUDING SUNDAYS AND HOLIDAYS. NOTICE OF CANCELLATION NEED NOT TAKE A PARTICULAR FORM AND IS EFFECTIVE IF IT INDICATES YOUR DESIRE TO NOT BE BOUND BY THIS CONTRACT. TO CANCEL THIS CONTRACT, SEND AN EMAIL, OR MAIL OR DELIVER A SIGNED AND DATED NOTICE, OR SEND A TELEGRAM, THAT STATES THAT YOU, THE BUYER, ARE CANCELING THIS CONTRACT, OR WORDS OF SIMILAR EFFECT. SEND THIS NOTICE TO: LibraryThing.com, Inc., doing business as Chapter One (Name of the business that sold you the contract), 286 Spring Street, Portland, Maine 04102 (Address of the business that sold you the contract), [email protected] (Email address of the online dating service that sold the contract). Subscribers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Wisconsin: see also "Notice to subscribers in certain states" below, which includes the statutory Notice of Cancellation form and explains how refunds work for purchases made through Apple or Google.

This section applies if you live in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island or Wisconsin, or if the law of any other state gives you similar rights. These states regulate contracts for dating services. The paid features of Chapter One are sold to you by LibraryThing.com, Inc., doing business as Chapter One, 286 Spring Street, Portland, Maine 04102, email [email protected] ("Chapter One," "we," "the seller"). The "date of this contract" or "date of transaction" is the date of your first paid purchase shown on your receipt. Nothing in this section limits any right you have under the law of your state; if these terms and your state's law conflict, your state's law controls, and any attempt to make you waive these rights is void.

1. Your right to cancel. You may cancel this contract, without any penalty or obligation, at any time before midnight of the third business day after the date of this contract. To make this simple, Chapter One gives every subscriber in the states listed above at least seven (7) calendar days after the date of your first paid purchase to cancel and receive a full refund of everything you paid, whichever is longer. (Ohio: this period runs from the day the first service under the contract is available to you, which is the day of purchase; Connecticut: from the later of your receipt of this contract or the day the service is made available to you; Illinois: you have 7 calendar days.)

2. How to cancel. Send us a notice that says you are canceling. It does not need any particular form; anything in writing that shows you do not want to be bound by this contract is enough. You can (a) email [email protected]; or (b) mail or deliver a signed and dated notice (you may use the Notice of Cancellation form below, or any other written notice) to Chapter One, Attn: Cancellations, 286 Spring Street, Portland, Maine 04102. Email is effective when you send it; mail is effective when you post it, properly addressed with postage prepaid. Please include the email address or phone number on your Chapter One account and, if you have it, your order number.

3. Your refund. We will refund all money you paid under this contract within ten (10) days after we receive your cancellation notice. We do not charge any cancellation fee. How the money reaches you depends on how you paid: • Purchases through Google Play: we will refund you through Google Play. You may also ask Google directly within 48 hours of purchase. • Purchases through the Apple App Store: Apple, not Chapter One, processes App Store refunds. Please also ask Apple for the refund right away, with "Request a refund" in the app or at reportaproblem.apple.com. If you cancelled within the cancellation period and Apple does not refund you within ten (10) days, tell us at [email protected] and we will refund you ourselves (by check or another method you choose) so that you receive a full refund within the time the law allows. Whichever way you paid, you must also turn off automatic renewal in the App Store or Google Play; we will show you how, and we will treat your cancellation notice to us as effective from the moment you send it.

4. If you die or become disabled before the end of your subscription period. If by reason of death or disability you are unable to receive all services for which you have contracted, you and your estate may elect to be relieved of the obligation to make payments for services other than those received before death or the onset of disability. If you have prepaid any amount for services, so much of the amount prepaid that is allocable to services that you have not received will be promptly refunded (and in any event within thirty (30) days after we receive notice) to you or your representative. "Disability" means a condition which precludes you from physically using the services specified in this contract during the term of disability and the condition is verified in writing by a physician designated and remunerated by you; the written verification must be presented to Chapter One. If the physician determines that the duration of the disability will be less than six months, Chapter One may extend the term of this contract for a period of six months at no additional charge to you in lieu of cancellation. We may require and verify reasonable evidence of death. To make a claim, contact us as described in paragraph 2.

5. Relocation. Chapter One is available throughout the United States, so moving within the United States does not affect your subscription. If you move to a place where Chapter One is not available or where you cannot use it, write to us as described in paragraph 2 with reasonable evidence of your new residence; we will either provide you comparable service or relieve you of payments for the period after your move and refund the unused portion of any prepayment, with no fee. This is our policy for a purchaser who moves to permanently reside at a location outside our service area.

6. Personal information. Chapter One will not, without your prior written consent, sell, assign or otherwise transfer for business or for any other purpose to any person any information and material of a personal or private nature acquired from you directly or indirectly, including but not limited to answers to tests and questionnaires, photographs or background information (except as necessary to provide the service to you and as described in our Privacy Policy). At the expiration of this contract or of the services for any reason, all such information and material will, at your election, be promptly returned to you (by certified mail if you request a physical copy, or electronically within thirty (30) days after your request) or destroyed and deleted from any electronic storage devices, with certification of destruction or deletion promptly provided to you, unless retention is required by federal, state, or local laws, rules or regulations or to comply with a judicial court order. You may request your information or its deletion at any time under Protagonist > Account or by writing to us as described in paragraph 2.

7. New York. (a) Referrals. Chapter One does not promise any particular number of "referrals" or matches per month; you may search and are presented with possible matches. If for two or more successive months you are not furnished any social referral (no profiles are presented to you and you are unable to search), you may cancel this contract and receive a refund of all money paid under it; Chapter One will not retain any cancellation fee (the law permits a fee of fifteen percent of the cash price or a pro rata amount for referrals furnished, whichever is greater, but we charge none). (b) Hold. Upon notice in writing sent to Chapter One, Attn: Hold, 286 Spring Street, Portland, Maine 04102 or [email protected], you may place your membership on hold for a period of up to one year; we may agree with you to a longer period not to exceed two years. To place your membership on hold, turn off automatic renewal in your App Store or Google Play account (so you are not billed during the hold) and send us the notice; we will record the unused portion of the period you have paid for and restore it to your account when you return within the hold period. (c) Price and term. No Chapter One subscription requires payment of more than $1,000 or extends more than one year per term. (d) Ancillary services. We do not require you to purchase any ancillary good or service as a condition of subscribing. (e) Dating Service Consumer Bill of Rights. You may review the New York Dating Service Consumer Bill of Rights at the end of this Appendix. (f) Fraud bans. If we ban a member for suspected fraud or false identity, we will notify members who exchanged messages with that member within the time the law requires.

8. Minnesota. Chapter One subscriptions sold to Minnesota members are month to month: the term is one month, renewing one month at a time until you cancel, and never longer than 18 months. In addition to everything above in this Appendix:

"MEMBERS' RIGHT TO CANCEL"

"If you wish to cancel this contract, you may cancel in-person, over the telephone, by delivering or mailing a written notice to the club, via email or an online message through the club's website, through the "termination election" provided on the club's website (if applicable) and as described in Minnesota Statutes, section 325G.60, or in any other manner or medium by which you initially accepted membership to the club. The notice must be provided to the club before midnight of the third business day after you sign this contract. If you cancel, the club will return, within ten days of the date on which you give notice of cancellation, any payments you have made."

"MEMBERS' RIGHT TO UNILATERAL TERMINATION"

"You may unilaterally terminate this contract in your exclusive discretion at any time.
