Cancel a subscription

This page is for members who want to cancel a Chapter One purchase under the cancellation rights in Section 12 and the Appendix of our Terms of Service. Paid features are sold through the Apple App Store and Google Play; there is nothing to cancel in the app itself.

How to cancel

Send us a notice that says you are cancelling. It does not need any particular form; anything in writing that shows you do not want to be bound by your purchase is enough. You can:

Your notice is effective when you send it: an email when you send it, a letter when you post it, properly addressed with postage prepaid. Please include the email address or phone number on your Chapter One account and, if you have it, your order number from Apple or Google.

Your rights, in short

If you bought through the Apple App Store

Apple, not Chapter One, processes App Store refunds. Please also ask Apple for the refund right away, with "Request a refund" in the app or at reportaproblem.apple.com. If you cancelled within the cancellation period and Apple has not refunded you within ten (10) days, tell us at [email protected] and we will refund you ourselves, by check or another method you choose, so that you receive a full refund within the time the law allows.

If you bought through Google Play

We will refund you through Google Play. You may also ask Google directly within 48 hours of purchase.

Turn off automatic renewal too

Whichever way you paid, please also turn off automatic renewal in the App Store or Google Play so you are not charged again. We treat your cancellation notice to us as effective from the moment you send it, whether or not you have turned renewal off yet.

Connecticut and Rhode Island subscribers: you may cancel this contract, without any penalty or obligation, at any time prior to midnight of the third business day after your receipt of this contract (or, in Connecticut, after the social referral service has been made available for your use, whichever is later) by mailing this signed and dated notice of cancellation by certified or registered United States mail to the seller at the address above (Rhode Island: or by email to [email protected]). If you cancel, any payments made by you under the contract will be returned within ten (10) business days following receipt by the seller of your cancellation notice.

Iowa subscribers: you may cancel this transaction, without any penalty or obligation, within three business days from the above date. If you cancel, any payments made by you under the contract or sale, and any negotiable instrument executed by you will be returned within ten business days following receipt by the seller of your cancellation notice, and any security interest arising out of the transaction will be canceled. To cancel this transaction, mail or deliver a signed and dated copy of this cancellation notice or any other written notice, or send a telegram, to LibraryThing.com, Inc. (Chapter One) (Name of seller) at 286 Spring Street, Portland, Maine 04102 (Address of seller's place of business) not later than midnight of the third business day after the date of transaction.

Ohio subscribers: You may cancel this contract for any reason at any time prior to midnight of the third business day after the date on which the first service under the contract is available, and if the facility or services that is the subject of the contract is not available when you sign the contract, you may cancel the contract at any time prior to midnight of the seventh business day after the date on which you receive your first service under the contract. If you cancel within this period, the seller must send you a full refund of any money you have paid, except that a reasonable expense fee not to exceed ten dollars may be charged if you have received your first service under the contract (Chapter One charges no such fee). The seller must also cancel and return to you within twenty business days any papers that you have signed. To cancel this contract you must deliver in person, manually, by certified mail, return receipt requested, or by facsimile transmission, the signed and dated copy of this cancellation notice or any other written notice of cancellation, or send an electronic mail message, to LibraryThing.com, Inc. (Chapter One) (name of seller), at 286 Spring Street, Portland, Maine 04102, or [email protected], not later than midnight of the third business day after the date on which the first service under the contract is available, and if the facility or service that is the subject of the contract is not available when the contract was signed, not later than midnight of the seventh business day after the date on which the first service under the contract is available.

Chapter One gives every subscriber in the states listed above at least seven calendar days, and refunds within ten days, whichever is longer than the statutory text above requires. See the Appendix to the Terms for your state.

Minnesota members

You may also cancel or terminate over the telephone; the number is in the Minnesota section of the Appendix. Calls are returned within one business day.
